Expansive Courtyard
Area: 1,400 sqm
This project integrates two seemingly opposing yet complementary garden philosophies: desire to connect with nature, and pursuit of order and logic found in European geometric gardens.
Around this traditional European-style building constructed of red brick, I sought to create an outdoor living space that balances a sense of ceremony with untamed charm of nature—possessing both the formal dignity of classical gardens and the free breath of verdant life.
The design is structured around two core narratives: "Front Courtyard: Ritual Order" and "Backyard: Vibrant Living," weaving together a spiritual journey from the hustle and bustle of the city back to the tranquility of nature.
The front courtyard establishes a sense of order through a symmetrical axial layout. Neatly arranged stone columns, black iron grille gates, and a circular jumping fountain together create an elegant and serene welcoming atmosphere. The pathways on both sides employ staggered stone paving, combined with strategically spaced plantings, to form a "tunnel of light and shadow"—footsteps naturally slow down, and the eye is gently guided toward the open expanse of the backyard.
The project benefits from its waterfront location, a geographical advantage fully translated into visual experience. A vanishing-edge pool seamlessly connects the private garden with the public lake view. The water surface, as smooth as a mirror, reflects the sky and clouds, dissolving the boundary between inside and outside. As the sun sets, the red brick architecture, lush plants, and still water are all bathed in a warm golden glow—quiet and profound, like a romantic landscape painting come to life.
